Tamil Nadu was the third state in India to computerize most of its land records in 2008. From 2016, the Government of Tamil Nadu changed the procedure. For both, name change and involve subdivision of the survey number, the applicant has to approach the taluk office with a copy of the below listed documents. The original documents must also be kept ready in case of any verification at the office

After verification of the originals and scanning of all the required documents, an Acknowledgement will be given after paying the relevant fee. It contains the Citizen Account Number (CAN) and application no. with date. For Patta name change, the acknowledgement copy along with all copy of the documents, application form is to be submitted to VAO. If it involves subdivision, then it has to be submitted to the Survey Department at Taluk office.
The applicant will receive the SMS on the registered mobile no. with Patta number and survey number with subdivision in 2 weeks’ time for name transfer and in 3 weeks’ time if it involves subdivision of the survey number.
To verify online, one has to log on to www.tn.gov.in and then click on the link “e-services of district offices”. You can click the “view the Patta / chitta extract” and the click on the URL. Select the view Patta and fill in all the details such as district, taluk, village, the patta number and the survey number with sub-division number received through SMS. The Patta can be downloaded and print can be taken for future reference. The status of the application can be found by going into the URL and then by clicking the “Know your application status.”
